I would like to thank everyone who has written in with suggestions for the show and we will definitely look into how we can implement them.

Dollar, Oil and Gold

Sounds like a modern day treasure chest doesn't it? It used to be strings of pearls, some gold dinner ware and diamonds. Now, everyone's ideal treasure chest contents have changed.

Anyway, here's Lee Cheng Hooi, the Head of Retail Research talking about the price of gold; the dollar; oil and also how the market will react to the budget.

Part 1

Part 2

We also spoke to Gerald Ambrose from Aberdeen Asset Management and Peter Lim from SJ Securities to find out their wish list for the upcoming budget that will be tabled in parliament on the 23rd October 2009. I wonder how many of it makes it to the budget.

This week, we are having Andrew Lee, head of research at Maybank Investment Bank. We are also having Suhaimi Illias, an economists also from Maybank Investment Bank. The main discussion would be what are the stocks that would benefit from the budget. Almost the whole episode this Sunday (25th October) will be dedicated to the post-budget discussion.

As usual, if you have a question you would like to post to them, email us at stockwatch@tv3.com.my

How will the market react to the budget?

"How will the market react to the budget?"... or rather, "how has the market reacted to the market previously?". That is the question I posed to our guest for this week, Lee Cheng Hooi, Technical Analyst from Maybank Investment Bank. He would be in our studio live on 18 October 2009.

This week it was really hard to get a guest to come on the show as all the analysts were busy preparing for the budget or writing a report. So its a good thing Cheng Hooi was kind enough to sacrifice his Sunday night to spend time talking to us on the show.

Anyway, as usual... if you have a question for the guest this week (18 October 2009), email us at stockwatch@tv3.com.my and we'll see if we can answer it.

Stock Watch on October 4th, 2009

These are the videos from Stock Watch on October 4th, 2009. Our main guest was Datuk Azman Mahmood, chairman of Crystalview Group of Companies. I was introduced to Datuk Azman by another colleague in the office. I had an hour chat with Datuk a few days ago in his office and he shared with me his many years of experience in the costruction sector.

He seemed like quite an interesting man and I thought the viewers would benefit from his thoughts. Although, this episode wasn't about stock picking, Datuk had a lot of interesting opinions on how the government can help the property market. Below is his interview with our host Sheahnee Iman Lee in the studio.

Part 1 of Datuk Azman Mahmood interview

Part 2 of Datuk Azman Mahmood interview

We also spoke to two construction sector analyst on their thoughts on who would benefit from the announcement of the expansion of the LRT lines in the Klang Valley. Below is the video.

This one is a story on how research firms actually pick stocks and how they work.

Sorry everyone, just realized Datuk's interview wasn't encoded properly by youtube. I have just re-upload the video again. It's working already!

Budget announcement on October 23rd

The other day, the prime minister (who is also the finance minister) invited the public to send in their comments on the soon to be announced budget on October 23rd (it's usually in the afternoon after market closes).

Normally, financial programs such as Stock Watch would invite economists and corporate leaders to the studio on October 23rd to discuss what they would like to see in the budget before the tabling of the budget. However, as it is done after the finance ministry has already finalized the budget, little changes can be made.

So this year, I am going to to do the "pre-budget" discussion a little earlier on October 11th. Our confirmed guest in the studio is noted economist, Datuk Dr. Zainal Aznam, member of the National Economic Action Council(NEAC). Datuk Dr. Zainal is a familiar face on TV every year during the budget and he is guest in high demand on financial talk-shows. I am honoured that he has agreed to appear on our show to discuss what he would like to see in the budget. So hopefully, the views we put on air can be considered a little earlier by the finance ministry (if they're watching).

For this episode, I would like to invite viewers to email us at stockwatch@tv3.com.my and let us know what are the things you would like to see in the budget. If you have any questions for our guest, do let us know also.

After that, we move on to the "post-budget" discussion on 25th October. To me, this is the most important one as we discuss how investors can change their investments according to the new budget. I am still looking for a guest for this episode, do let us know who you would like to appear on the show for this episode.

ETF's, episode 12 from 23 September 2009

This was an interview we aired on 23 September, 2009 (episode 12).

The guest was Zainal Izan Zainal Abidin explaining how ETF's work and his company's ETF performance. This was broadcasted on 23 August, 2009.

On that episode, we had some audio problem where the music was too loud. Here, I have fixed the problem and I have uploaded it for viewing here.

D is for Depression?

Last Sunday, we interviewed Choong Khuat Hock, from Kumpulan Sentiasa Cemerlang Sdn. Bhd. He is also the author of D is for Depression. As Andrew Lee couldn't make it to the show, he recommended we interview Hock instead. We asked Hock about what stocks he likes and what he thinks of the economic recovery.

Me and Hock after the live programming. Sasha Bashir shot this on her Blackberry after the program. Someone told me we both look alike. Do we?

Part 1

Part 2

I've been reading his book. Very interesting correlation between the great depression and the current depression we're going through. You can find it in MPH.

The other stories we had on that day were a stock pick and the market summary.

Market Summary

Stock Pick by an analyst (TRC Synergy)

There's no Stock Watch this week as we take a break for Hari Raya. We'll be back on air on the 27th September. Selamat Hari Raya everyone! Drive safe.

2 hours before the show

It's almost another 2 hours to go before we go on air.

I'm sitting in the editing suite waiting for my reporter to do her voice-overs for the stories and then we'll finalize the edits. There's only 2 stories for this week and the live guest in the studio.

There's the market summary report (what happened last week and what is going to happen this week); and a stock pick by an analyst (TRC Synergy).

I had to drop Sasha's story on Jobstreet as today's commercial break was longer than expected. Since the fasting month has started, the commercial breaks are little longer than usual.

The story will go on air on the 27th. Next week, there's no Stock Watch as we make way for Hari Raya programming. So, we'll be of the air for one episode, we'll be back on the 27th.

This holiday break will give us time to review what has happened through out the whole of the first season so far.

The thing about doing a live show is that it always feel like flying a plane. The viewers are the passengers; the production team is the flight crew and the interviews and stories we roll on air is the journey itself. The production team has to make sure its a smooth flight and that the viewers are comfortable through out the flight. Sometimes we get technical problems, but the priority is always to get the viewers to the end of the show.

Hopefully, we get to the end of the show safely today!

After the show

Well, another episode done. Normally, by the time I get home it's already 1:30AM.

Tonight was the first night we promoted the blog on the show. So the 'open' sign is on the door and I'll be expecting many more visitors to this site.

The episode tonight is actually episode 1 of season 2. Every season is 13 episodes, so we just finished our 14th episode tonight. Kind of relieved we've made it this far.

Before the show, I was talking to Cheng Hooi. This is the 3rd time we had him on the show. Most interesting guy.

He mentioned that the year of the Tiger is actually the bottom of market from the historical point of view. This is based on the previous crashes in the Malaysian market. So 2010 could be the bottom of the market. I asked him when in 2010, he said it was hard to tell still. Maybe some Feng Shui master out there would know better?

I also asked him of all the markets in the Asia-Pacific region, which one is the most interesting one now. He said it was Australia.

This actually reminds me of what the other analysts I've been speaking too have been telling me. For example, Tan Teng Boo from iCapital.biz berhad opened Sydney office not too long ago. Maybe I'll find an analyst who can tell us more about good Australian stock picks. Should be interesting now that Malaysian investors are certainly more savvy and are open to trading in foreign markets.

Actually for tonight, there was two other stock picks that I dropped from the lineup. One was Guiness Anchor which was rated as a hold with a Target Price of RM7.00. I figure it was the fasting month and it was just a hold, best to drop it.

The other one was Media Prima which was rated as a Buy with a Target Price of RM1.64. Since Media Prima owns Primeworks Studio (the production house that produces Stock Watch) and TV3, it would be biased to put it up as stock pick.

Anyway, each stock pick of the week slide is 30 second, so the two I dropped was already a minute which was taken up by Cheng Hooi's slot.

After every live show, we have a short production meeting with the host and reporters. So for next week, we're going to do more stock picks. It seems that people really like the Buy recommendations. Anyone wants to see a story on a sell?

Sasha is doing an interview with Jobstreet this Wednesday, so that story should be up for next episode. It would be interesting to see how the local job market is doing.

Also, I'm going to invite Andrew Lee, the Head of Research for Maybank Investment Bank to the studio for next Sunday. If all goes well, he'll have a stock pick he likes. If for some reason he can't make it to the show, I'm sure I'll have something lined up for the coming Sunday.

As in all live show, we can only plan for the best, and prepare for the worst!

I'll have Cheng Hooi's interview up soon. Got to get some sleep first.

Bad news

The episode for the 6th September is going to be gloomy. Yesterday, I was on the phone with the guest and he said "are you ready for some bad news?".

This week, I'm inviting our regular chartist, Cheng Hooi from Maybank Investment Bank to the studio. Apparently, his study on the market indicates that "people are taking money off the table". Hrm, not sure what he meant by that but we'll find out this Sunday.

Other than that, we have a short story on the banking sector. It'll be interesting to see how they're performing. The analyst my reporter is doing the interview with is publishing her report on the same day.

Stock Watch episode 13, 30 August 2009 - round table interview

For the Merdeka eve episode, we recorded a round table discussion with 3 guest, Suhaimi Illias, Chief Economist, Maybank Investment Bank
Andrew Lee, Head of Research of Maybank Investment Bank
Gerald Ambrose, Managing Director of Aberdeen Asset Management Sdn. Bhd.

The total duration of the interview was actually almost 30 minutes but for TV purposes, I had to edit it down to 15 minutes or less.

The guests talks about their stock picks and economic forecasts for end of the year and also if Malaysia is heading into a middle-income trap.

What they said about the middle-income trap is food for thought about whether Malaysia is going to achieve Vision 2020.

Here is the full recorded interview.

First post

I have decided to start a blog for Stock Watch as I find that a lot of the materials that we do record does not go on air.

For a 30 minute program, a lot of content has to be edited down to fit the on-air timing. Hence, a lot of content is cut out.

A blog with the full-length footages or behind the scenes commentary would give a fuller picture to the viewers of stock watch.

Stay tuned for more behind the scenes content!
